With recent developments in technology, job roles are taking newer shapes. Companies are looking for candidates with new skills and efficiency. Thus the process of hiring is changing day by day. Conventional questions and interview rounds are taking a backseat. Managers and hiring panels are coming up with new ways to test the interviewers’ overall skill and ability to think out of the box. More and more competition in the market is leading the companies hire people with more creativity and ideas. Brain teasers are an excellent way to judge a lot of qualities cumulatively.

brain teaser is basically a puzzle that requires thought to solve. It requires unconventional ways to think with attention to given constraints; sometimes it involves lateral thinking and intuition. Logic puzzlesriddles, wordings are some types of brain teasers.

The Qualities that an interviewer wants to judge through a brain teaser are ones:

  1. Process of thinking
  2. Attention to details
  3. Attitude towards the unknown
  4. Confidence
  5. Communicative skills
  6. Problem-solving capacity
  7. Response under pressure

Some companies who focus highly on brain teasers are Facebook, Goldman Sachs, Google, Amazon, GlaxoSmithKlineRolls Royce etc.

The major types of brain teasers are categorized as follows:

  1. Riddle based: These questions are generally very long and involve a lot of abstract facts. Generally, there is no definite answer to these. They involve quick thinking and a logical approach. The interviewer judges, how logically and swiftly one understands and figures out the answer.
  2. The “How many”s: These questions need a great deal of general knowledge. The candidate should be very careful about judging the question. There are generally hidden facts, that one needs to consider. It is always important to pay attention to details while answering these questions.
  3. Numerical: These questions involve your mathematical knowledge, not just the simple addition-multiplication, but even the complex ones. Probability is a very common sector in this regards. The candidate’s regular problem-solving knowledge and swiftness in calculating large numbers are tested here. One needs to consider the otherwise overseen factors while attempting these. These are generally asked to people from finance and related sectors.

With proper preparation and practice brain teasers can be solved with ease. Here is how to proceed:

  1. Jot it down: Ask for a pen and paper or better carry one.Write down the major points chronologically and then focus on each. The sequential arrangement will help you.
  2. Listen carefully: Do not miss out any point that the interviewer mentions. pay attention to the words he uses.
  3.  Attention to details: Do not over think. Some questions are asked solely to check your reflex actions. So pay attention to details.
  4. Relax: Don’t get panicked at the very thought of brain teasers. Relax. You will be able to think better.
  5. Work and explain: Remember to put logic behind every small step. Even if you cannot conclude, show your proceedings to the panel. They will still appreciate if you have a logical approach.
  6. Answer: Do not surrender without trying. Even if you are unsure, answer something. Take your time. But don’t just leave it.
