How to Get the Best Internship Program?

THIS ARTICLE WAS UPDATED ON 27/JUNE/2020

Getting an internship in a big company is a dream for a lot of people. An internship is the beginning of a long journey in the corporate world.

Giving an interview for an internship is different than that for a job. For an internship, no one asks for your experience and all the applicants will be considered on the same grounds. While doing an internship you’re not expected to behave in a certain way as in a job, instead, you learn how to behave while doing a job afterward.

You may have decided the company in which you want to work as an intern but getting an internship is not a piece of cake. There’s high competition among the applicants also.

Tips for getting the best internship program

Getting an internship in a big company also helps you during your job interviews. So, I am going to share some tips with you that can help you get an internship in your dream company:

  • Search for the one that will benefit you

While there are innumerable companies in every sector, search those which will benefit you in the future. Internships help you learn and give the experience of the work that you will do when you will get a job in the same field. So, try to choose such companies for your internship that will help you grow in the direction of your goal.

  • Prepare your best

When you are applying for an internship, you should always remember that there will be hundreds of more applicants like you who desire that internship. If you want to get hired by that company then you should prepare for it as well. While having an interview for an internship the interviewer won’t ask you anything outside the subject. He will test your knowledge regarding the field your internship is based upon.

Since you are yet to be a graduate, it is expected that you won’t know everything, but prepare all you know well. Remember to lay extra stress in your comfortable areas, highlight them in your resume as well.

Books like ”Cracking The Code Interview by McDowell” and “Liang’s Introduction to Java programming” are good for software engineering internships.

“The Encyclopedia of Human Resource Management: Short Entries” by William J. Rothwell is a good book for HR internships.

Prepare the answers before the interview

When you’re preparing for the internship interview keep in mind the common questions asked in those interviews. Just like job interviews, internship interviews have their own set of common questions too, like:

a) Why did you choose this company?

b) What are your plans after graduation?

c) Why did you choose this stream?

As these questions are very common to be asked in the interview, you should prepare for their answers beforehand. Preparing their answers will keep you from wasting time in front of the interviewer thinking about the answers. If you prepare earlier, you will also have quality answers to these questions and it will have a nice impression on the interviewer.

Be brand-specific

Do not repeat the same answer for all companies. Make sure to change and prepare answers and queries according to the sector and the brand. Know the brand’s specialty and their latest products and technologies.

Have backup

If by chance, you do not get to intern at your favorite company, don’t be disheartened. Have a backup plan. Make a list of other companies where you can probably apply, with higher chances of getting hired. If not anything, have a backup travel plan. Travelling is always a good idea. This plan will keep you calm, as you won’t have much to lose. This will help you get over your fears and face the interview calmly.

Relax

Internships are important, but again it is just an internship. There is way more to do with your break. So don’t be tense. Relax. This will, in turn, help you, making the process easier.

Just keep these few things in mind, and bag the chance of interning at your favorite company. Learn as much as you can. Explore your creativity.
