BCA For Science Students: Yes or No?
A BCA or Bachelors in Computer Application is a course taken up by people who want to delve in the field of computers and eke out a career for themselves in that particular field. It is a three-year professional degree course offered by several universities in India. Some of these include prestigious universities like Symbiosis University, Pune and Christ University, Bengaluru.
Is it Recommended?
This course is suitable and sometimes, even recommended for Science stream students, especially those who had Physics-Chemistry-Maths in school.Many schools offer Computer Science as an elective subject in the Science Stream and thereby enabling students to apply to a BCA course if they wish to do so.
Computer languages like Java, C/C++, FoxPro, Visual Basic, Pagemaker, PHP, Linux Shell programming are only some of the things that are taught in this course. Students also learn the programming languages, constructing code, building a logic and logic development. Some institutes also teach foreign languages to make the student more capable of finding quality employment.
Along with the above, a BCA course also teaches basics like MS Office, communication skills, Software Modeling, Software development Lifecycle and making Computer Graphics using C/C++.
Eligibility Criteria:
The general eligibility of pursuing BCA from any of the top colleges include:
A 10+2 education in usually any stream. However, some colleges make it mandatory for the student to have a background in Mathematics.
The student should score a minimum of 45% marks in the qualifying exam.
Many colleges conduct their own internal entrance exams for admission to BCA courses. These colleges include Benaras Hindu University, IPU, and IGNOU.
The CET tests usually include general questions about GK, English, Maths, and Verbal Reasoning.
Students from the Science stream with a computer science background will find themselves especially suited to take up BCA. It will be highly relevant to their course of study and they will even have a basic knowledge of the subjects to be taught. Their background in Mathematics will also help them to progress in this field.
A BCA degree is often considered equivalent to a to a B.tech degree. With a BCA degree, a student can get placed in one of the many IT companies like Wipro; or he may choose to pursue his MCA which will further brighten his prospects.
In the end of the day, however, it is the enthusiasm and interest of the student that matters in him choosing this line of study, regardless of his background. Although being a Science Student will make it easier for him to grasp the concepts, it will ultimately be his hunger to strive and gain knowledge that will propel him up the ladder of success.
