World Intellectual Property Day” for the II Semester students of B. Com (Hons)
School of Management Sciences, Varanasi organized session on “World Intellectual Property Day” for the II Semester students of B. Com (Hons) on 26th April, 2023 in the conference hall at SMS Varanasi. The programme was organized under the aegis of Institution’s Innovation Council (IIC) and Centre for Public Policy Development (CPPD), School of Management Sciences (SMS) Varanasi. The workshop began by lighting the lamp and garlanding the statue of goddess Saraswati. Thereafter, an insightful welcome address was given by the Honorable Director of the Institute Prof. P. N. Jha. Prof. R. K Singh, President – Institution’s Innovation Council and Chairperson of Centre for public policy development, School of Management Sciences, Varanasi blessed the gathering by briefing them about the Institution’s Innovation Council (IIC) and Centre for public policy development (CPPD). The key note speaker of the workshop was Prof. Rajnish Kumar Singh, Professor, Faculty of Law, Banaras Hindu University. He started the workshop with the explanation of Intellectual Property Rights. According to him, In India we give Intellectual Property Right to process and not to product and locating the physical property is not so difficult but locating the intellectual property is very difficult. Further he explained the IPR which means the right or a property which is created with your intellect. IPR is a “private property or my property”. These rights include trademarks, branding, design, patents and copyrights. He discussed in detail about the above mentioned rights. He opined copyright is given on those work which are fixed and which are original. Copyright is applicable on literary work, Dramatic work, Musical work, Artistic work, e.t.c. anything which is result of work is copyright and it has flexibility. The keyword for identifying copyright is originality. He said a trademark is a mark which is used in trade and it should be distinctive which enables the customer to identify the product in a market amongst various other products. The keyword for identifying trademark is distinctiveness. As per deliberation he further said about patent, which is an agreement between the person’s inventions and government bodies. The keyword for identifying patent is inventiveness. Prof. Singh also highlighted the theme for the 2023 celebration of World Intellectual Property Day which is "Women and IP: Accelerating Innovation and Creativity," which emphasized the crucial role of women in propelling innovation and creativity forward. He further explains Monopoly creation is not the primary law rather it’s a least important law. He described how we can choose strong trademark. Huge distinctiveness and user perspective should be kept in mind for choosing strong trademark. At last he spoke about Geographical Identification (GI). Prof. Singh was felicitated by Prof. P. N. Jha, Director SMS Varanasi and the vote of thanks was given by Mr. Atish Khadse, Associate Professor & Coordinator of B.Com(Hons.) programme. The Programme was coordinated by Dr. Sofia Khan, Co-Cordinator of BBA Programme & Assistant Professor, SMS Varanasi. Mr. Suraj Prakash Singh, Co-Cordinator of B.Com (Hons.) Programme and other members of IIC & CPPD were also present in the workshop.
