Workshop on Intellectual Property Rights : In the current perspectives of researches of higher education

A one day workshop on Intellectual Property Rights: In the Current Perspectives of Researches in Higher Education was organised on 6th May for the faculty members in the conference hall. It was the first programme under the aegis of CARD, Centre for Advance Research And Development, School of Management Sciences (SMS) Varanasi.
The workshop began by lighting the lamp and garlanding the statue of goddess Saraswati. Thereafter, an insightful welcome address was given by Prof. P. N. Jha, director, School of Management Sciences, Varanasi wherein he emphasised that it is a matter of intellectual consciousness that SMS is organizing a workshop on such a contemporary and highly demanding issue. He further added that we were fortunate enough to get an insight on IPR from Prof. R. K. Murali. Mr. Jha reiterated that IP has all the potential to breed material property as well and further stressed that we as teachers should know how to address any situation that come across us regarding violation of IPR. The key note speaker of the workshop was Prof. R. K. Murali, Professor, Faculty of Law, Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi. He discussed in detail about the various concepts associated with Intellectual Property Rights like trademarks, patents, copyrights etc. He opined that a trademark is a mark, which is used in trade, and it should be distinctive which enables the customer to identify the product in a market amongst various other products. He further elaborated about patent which is an agreement between the persons inventions and government bodies. He added that Inventions those are novel are Patents and a new form of a known substance cannot be patents unless and until it is efficacious. Dr. R. K. Murali also explained some of the important terms used in IPR i.e. licensing & agreement, exclusive licensing and non- exclusive licensing, sole licensing, parallel importation, infringement, passing off, goodwill, reputation, etc. Prof. Murali was felicitated by Prof. P. N. Jha, director, SMS and the vote of thanks was given by Prof. R. K. Singh, Dean (R&D) & Chairperson CARD, SMS Varanasi. The Programme was coordinated by Dr. Bhavana Singh, Assistant Professor, SMS Varanasi.
