Admission Procedure

How to Apply

Important Dates

Seats for 2026–27 (Cycle I): 10 (7 for RET-Exempted candidates and 3 for RET-Qualified candidates).
Routes: SMS Research Entrance Test (RET); exemption for valid UGC-NET and JRF holders; scrutiny for part-time candidates (External and Internal Part-Time).
Interview: 30 marks, with a PowerPoint presentation of the research proposal, in person at SMS Varanasi.
Final merit: 70% for the NET/RET score and 30% for the interview. JRF holders are selected on the interview alone.
Modes: full-time and part-time. The Ph.D. is not offered by distance or online mode.

Read the Admission Bulletin and the notice for the cycle.
Register on the online portal with an active e-mail address and mobile number.
Select Ph.D. in Commerce, the route, mode of study and category, and fill in the details.
Upload the documents and the research proposal in the prescribed format.
Pay the application fee online, submit, and save the application form and the receipt.

All important information and dates will be notified on the website before the application window opens. The RET and the interview will be held at SMS Varanasi.

Late fee and re-registration fee are given in the Admission Bulletin (Section 8). Fees are refunded as per the UGC Fee Refund Policy in force for the session.

Programme Structure

Coursework of 12 credits in the first semester (Research Methodology; Computer Applications and Research Tools; Research and Publication Ethics; Review of Literature and Academic Writing).
A Research Supervisor and a Research Advisory Committee guide each scholar, with a progress review every semester.
Synopsis, pre-submission seminar, thesis in English, evaluation by two external examiners and the supervisor, and a viva-voce.
